Job Purpose

To execute precise assembly, maintenance, and preparation of rolling mill stands and guide equipment within the Roll Shop, ensuring readiness, accuracy, and reliability of equipment for smooth mill operations and high product quality.

Key Responsibilities

1. Stand Assembly (Roll Shop Activities)

• Assemble and disassemble rolling mill stands, including rolls, chocks, bearings, housings, and spindles
• Carry out roll mounting, dismounting, and proper fitment in stands
• Ensure correct clearances, tightening torque, and alignment before dispatch to mill
• Prepare standby stands for quick changeover during rolling

2. Guide Assembly & Pre-Setting

• Assemble entry and delivery guides (static and roller guides) in the Roll Shop
• Pre-set guides as per pass design, rolling schedule, and product size
• Check alignment, roller condition, and smooth movement of guide components
• Maintain guide settings records for repeatability and consistency

3. Inspection & Maintenance

• Inspect rolls, bearings, chocks, and guide components for wear and damage
• Replace defective parts such as liners, bushes, rollers, and fasteners
• Coordinate with roll grinding team for roll condition and profile readiness
• Maintain proper lubrication of bearings and moving parts

4. Coordination with Mill Operations

• Ensure timely availability of ready stands and guides for mill operation
• Support quick stand and guide changeover to minimize mill downtime
• Work closely with mill operators and shift teams for size changes and troubleshooting

5. Preventive Maintenance

• Follow preventive maintenance schedules for stands, guides, and accessories
• Maintain history of equipment repairs and replacements
• Ensure availability of critical spares in coordination with stores

6. Quality Assurance

• Ensure accurate stand and guide setup to achieve required product dimensions and surface finish
• Avoid misalignment issues that may cause cobbles, twisting, or defects
• Adhere to standard operating procedures (SOPs) and quality norms

7. Safety & Housekeeping

• Follow all safety protocols while handling heavy stands, rolls, and tools
• Use appropriate PPE at all times
• Maintain proper housekeeping and organized storage of stands, guides, and components
• Ensure safe use of lifting equipment like EOT cranes
