Roles & Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

  • Teaching and Lesson Planning:
    • Plan and deliver lessons aligned with IB MYP/DP frameworks, emphasizing conceptual understanding, global contexts, and inquiry-based learning.
    • Plan and deliver high-quality design lessons for students across various age groups, ensuring lessons are engaging, age-appropriate, and aligned with the school s curriculum.
    • Integrate ATL skills (thinking, research, communication, self-management, and social skills) into learning experiences.
    • Plan lessons that provide opportunities for students to connect scientific concepts to DP CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) and MYP Service Action projects fostering real-world application and interdisciplinary learning.
    • Introduce students to a wide range of artistic techniques, media, and tools, including product design, digital design, visual communication, and 3D modeling.
    • Encourage students to experiment with different forms of design develop their unique style.


  • Student Assessment and Progress Monitoring:
    • Design and implement assessments consistent with MYP criteria-based and DP criterion-referenced frameworks.
    • Provide ongoing formative and summative assessments that guide learning and inform teaching.
    • Collaborate in developing common assessments and standardization processes within the department to ensure fairness and consistency.
    • Assess students' modeling skills and performance through a variety of methods, including observational assessments, critiques, and project evaluations.
    • Provide constructive feedback on student projects, focusing on strengths and areas for improvement.
    • Maintain accurate records of student progress and attendance.
    • Offer individualized support to students who require additional guidance to achieve their potential.


  • Classroom Management:
    • Maintain a positive and respectful learning environment in the design room, where students feel safe to express their creativity and ideas.
    • Establish and enforce classroom rules and expectations, ensuring a focused and productive environment.
    • Manage classroom materials and supplies, ensuring proper organization, care, and usage of resources.


  • Curriculum Development:
    • Develop and update the design curriculum to ensure it is aligned with current IB MYP/DP standards and best practices in the design.
    • Participate in the creation and refinement of unit plans, assessments, and internal standardization activities.
    • Integrate interdisciplinary links and global contexts in lessons to foster a holistic understanding of scientific concepts.
    • Support students in making connections between Design and other subjects, encouraging interdisciplinary learning.
    • Collaborate with other teachers in the Arts and Design Department to create interdisciplinary projects or design-based initiatives.
    • Continuously review and refine lesson plans to incorporate new techniques, trends, and resources in the design world.
    • Support the development of Internal Assessments (DP) and personalized inquiry projects (MYP) by guiding students through the process of exploration, reflection, and communication.


  • Extracurricular Activities:
    • Organize design exhibitions, showcases, or displays to celebrate student projects and foster school-wide appreciation of creativity and innovation.
    • Provide opportunities for students to participate in design-related extracurricular activities such as coding clubs, robotics teams, maker spaces, design competitions, or school innovation events.
    • Encourage students to submit their projects for local, national, or international design, technology, or innovation contests and exhibitions.
    • Serve as IB MYP Personal Project and IB DP Extended Essay Supervisor as requested.
    • Serve as IB MYP Service Action or IB DP CAS Advisor as assigned.


  • Student Engagement and Motivation:
    • Inspire and motivate students to develop their creativity and design skills through a variety of hands-on activities and projects.
    • Encourage students to take risks, experiment, and explore new ideas in their design projects.
    • Provide guidance and feedback to students, helping them refine their techniques and improve their work.
    • Create an inclusive and supportive environment where all students feel valued and encouraged to participate.
    • Promote the IB Learner Profile attributes, helping students become inquirers, thinkers, and reflective learners.


  • Professional Development:
    • Participate in professional development opportunities such as workshops, conferences, and seminars to stay updated on current design education trends and best practices in the IBO.
    • Share knowledge and resources with other teachers to enhance the overall design curriculum and teaching strategies within the school.
    • Preferably, experience teaching Design within the IB MYP and/or DP frameworks.
    • Deep understanding of concept-based, inquiry-driven pedagogy and criterion-related assessment.


  • Parental and Community Engagement:
    • Communicate regularly with parents about student progress in the design, including sending home updates on completed projects, assessments, and upcoming design events.
    • Engage with the school community through art shows, school-wide projects, and collaborative initiatives.
    • Work with other departments to integrate design into broader school activities and events.


  • Health and Safety:
    • Ensure that all activities are conducted with proper safety precautions, especially when using materials and equipment such as paints, clay, or cutting tools.
    • Educate students on safe practices while using design materials and tools, always ensuring their well-being.


Desired Candidate Profile

Bachelor s degree in design, art or technology, or a related field (master s degree preferred). Teaching certification (if required by local regulations). Proven experience teaching design in a classroom setting. Strong knowledge of various design techniques, media, and tools. Ability to communicate and engage students creatively, fostering a positive learning environment. Excellent organizational and time-management skills. Ability to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of students with varying abilities and skill levels. A passion for the design and a commitment to helping students develop their creativity. Familiarity with modern technology in design, such as digital art software and tools. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and students.
