Founded in 1866, W.J. Towell Construction & Company LLC is amongst the oldest family owned businesses in the Gulf region. The company was named after William Jack Towell who was from the UK and was later bought by Mohamed Fadhil, the great grandfather of the Sultan family, in 1914. Since then the company has soared to great heights and succeeded in expanding the business. Shipping being the major strength of the company, W.J. Towell Construction & Company also became the representative of the British India Steam Navigation (B.I.) and started the service of carrying passengers and goods between India and the Gulf countries in 1862. The group which is run by the fourth and the fifth generation of the Sultan family has its branches in Kuwait, Iraq and Dubai.
The trading wing of the company deals in exporting commodities such as dry lime, pomegranate, dates, dried fish, and other agricultural consumer products to Gulf countries and Europe. After the reign of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said successfully started in 1970 and the economy opened to more new opportunities, W.J. Towell Construction expanded its business to infrastructure as well. The company was involved in building the housing city of Madinat Al Sultan Qaboos, starting the first printing press and even contributed towards establishing the National Bank of Oman.
