Roles & Responsibilities
Parsons is looking for an amazingly talented Underground Structures Expert to join our team! The successful candidate will be responsible for providing expert advice to the Client on a major rail project in UAE.
What You'll Be Doing:
Management of the design and construction of complex underground structures including tunnels (TBM, NATM/SEM), cut-and-cover sections, shafts, portals, and underground boxes ensuring they are safe, structurally sound, compliant with regulations, and delivered within budget and schedule.
Oversee the review of complex structural and geo-structural design tasks for tunnels and underground structures and deliver engineering work efficiently and accurately.
Validate geotechnical and structural design basis, load cases, and numerical analyses to ensure compliance with client standards and relevant codes.
Oversee ground structure interaction, support of excavation, waterproofing, and drainage design to control settlement, water ingress, and long-term durability.
Review and provide expert input on construction methods, sequences, and temporary works for underground excavation, support, and lining installation.
Lead risk identification and mitigation for underground works, including geotechnical risks, groundwater, stability, and interaction with existing assets.
Support site teams during construction by reviewing shop drawings, method statements, monitoring data, NCRs/RFIs, and advising on design changes.
Coordinate with track, railway systems, structures, utilities, and Fire & Life Safety disciplines to manage technical interfaces for underground assets.
Review and oversee technical reports, design review comments, and recommendations to project management and external stakeholders.
Provide expert advice to client on impact of design and construction solutions in relation to underground structures.
Peer review of complex 2D and 3D structural and geotechnical analyses, design calculations and engineering reports.
Peer review of engineering drawings and sketches using Microstation and AutoCAD in collaboration with drafters/designers/contractors.
Establish Design Basis, technical specifications/philosophies, work scope/tender documents/narratives.
Evaluate supplier/subcontractor technical bids for compliance to Client specifications and scopes of work.
Review of vendor drawings/other discipline drawings for adequacy of Civil design input requirements.
Optimize design solutions to meet budget constraints without compromising quality and safety.
Commitment to quality and continuous improvement through innovation, creative thinking and improved results.
Establish and maintain cooperative and productive relationships with all employees, clients and other stakeholders.
Coordination with other disciplines, including geotechnical, structural, track, rail systems and others.
Review of construction submittals
What Minimum Required Skills You'll Bring:
Batchelor s degree and/or have Chartered Engineer Status, with not less than 15 years experience in design and construction of underground structures with a minimum of 10 years in the management of design and/or construction of major rail projects, preferably HSR.
Strong knowledge and practical application of international design codes and standards for underground works (EC2, EC7, EC8, ACI, BS or equivalent).
Experience managing multi-disciplinary rail civils packages and interfaces.
Proven construction management experience.
Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills. Capacity to translate complex technical subjects into clear terms for non-technical leadership and ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary project teams and build strong professional relationships.
Effective and written skills for client presentations, technical reporting, and internal / external correspondence; ability to effectively present information to key stakeholders as oral required by the client.
Proven ability to function in a multi-organizational environment by developing relationships that comply with the client s proactive, collaborative culture.
Ability to thrive in an intense yet rewarding work culture.
Self-motivated and capable of managing tasks independently while taking direction as needed.
Quick learner who is people-oriented and a proactive problem solver.
Demonstrated ability to tackle challenges with a "go-getter" mindset.
What Desired Skills You'll Bring:
Proven experience on High-Speed Rail projects is highly desirable.
GCC/UAE Experience
Proficiency with advanced analysis software for underground works such as PLAXIS, MIDAS, FLAC, ABAQUS or similar, plus common structural design tools.
Experience developing and managing geotechnical risk registers, monitoring plans, and Trigger Action Response Plans (TARP) on large tunnelling projects.
Efficient in modeling and designing underground structural systems using 2D and 3D finite element analyses (Plaxis, STAAD.Pro, SAP2000, and/or similar programs).
