Roles & Responsibilities

The internship is located in the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), Regional Office for the Arab States (ROAS) in Cairo, Egypt. The internship is unpaid, part-time, and remote. The intern works five days per week. The intern will work under the supervision of the Associate programme officer.

The intern will support ongoing work on urban resilience and resilient infrastructure in the Arab States

  • Conduct desk reviews of existing strategies and policy documents related to urban development, climate change adaptation, infrastructure planning, housing, and local governance.
  • Support the design and analysis of structured surveys, interviews and questionnaires to assess integration of urban resilience and infrastructure resilience into national and local planning frameworks.
  • Support the collection and analysis of both secondary data and primary data through interviews and consultations with key stakeholders (government entities, agencies, and partners).
  • Support the identification and analysis of gaps in the integration of urban resilience, resilient infrastructure, and DRR into development frameworks, sectoral policies, and planning processes.
  • Conduct research on good practices and approaches for localizing DRR and urban resilience in the region.
  • Draft analytical summaries, background notes, presentations, and briefing materials based on research findings.
  • Prepare knowledge products, including presentations, briefs, and communication materials.
  • Ensure cross-cutting themes such as disability inclusion, and the use of sex-disaggregated data are reflected in all outputs.

Desired Candidate Profile

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's degree or equivalent). 1. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required; 2. Applicants must have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Excel and MS Teams. Applicants must be computer literate in standard software applications including MS Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); 3. Ability to conduct policy analysis and desk research is desirable; 4. Experience or familiarity with urban resilience, disaster risk reduction, or climate adaptation is desirable;
