Job Description
Roles & Responsibilities
Provides leadership to the college by articulating an inspiring vision for the college s future, translating that vision into specific goals, and obtaining the support necessary to achieve those goals.
Fosters student intellectual development and college s academic mission through sound educational policy and a contemporary curriculum.
Promotes the recruitment, retention and academic progress of undergraduate, graduate and professional students.
Recruits and retains faculty of the highest caliber; promotes excellence among the faculty; sets a standard personally for academic scholarship, engagement and integrity.
Recruits and retains staff of the highest quality and promotes their development; builds an effective and reputable leadership team.
Fosters and promotes gender equity and ethnic diversity among students, faculty and staff to enrich the university environment.
Consults and communicates regularly with the faculty on policy, planning and actions significant to the college.
Manages resources wisely, through the allocation of space and budget in support of defined priorities and the continuous development of new sources of revenue.
Promotes externally funded research.
Represents and advances the interests of the college and PMU by skillfully developing relationships with parties external to the college, both on campus and off.
Increases the external financial support for the college through fundraising efforts and through the relationships referenced above.
Aligns the college s activities and goals with the greater interests of the campus and university.
Medical degree or equivalent.
Minimum of five years full-time university-level professional experience prior role in key leadership positions at previous medical school (e.g., Department Chair, Dean of Curriculum, Dean of Faculty Affairs).
Experience in instructional program administration, curriculum development/management, and teaching at the college level.
Experience with health profession education in a health-care setting.
Certification in at least 1 medical specialty area (completion of residency).
Demonstration of broad understanding of higher education structures, norms, roles, and missions; experience in managing within a highly matrixed organization.
Demonstration of integrity, a high level of energy and proven achievement, excellent oral and written communication skills, and exceptional interpersonal relationship, team building, organization, presentation, and problem-solving skills.
Proven leadership and administration skills as demonstrated by academic advancement of department or area of the school in which the dean was working.
Prior managerial experience, strong negotiation skills.
