Job Description
Roles & Responsibilities
The role requires a highly skilled physician who can handle high-pressure situations and work in a dynamic, often resource-constrained environment.
This position is integral to ensuring that the medical team delivers prompt, efficient, and quality care in line with Afghanistan UNAMA protocols and international medical standards.
Clinical activities are achieved and delivered within agreed time frames and are compliant with medical standards in accordance with the client contract and International regulations as appropriate.
The provision of a comprehensive evidence-based ICU service within a multidisciplinary framework within the ICU and associated areas.
Maintain a positive working relationship with the Client and uphold the professional reputation and service delivery for Aspen Medical.
Maintain contemporary clinical practice, knowledge, skills and protocols through active learning by engaging in professional development activities.
Essential- A first-level degree in Medicine and Critical Care with a minimum of 3 years of progressive post-qualification clinical experience.
- Board-certified/postgraduate certified by an appropriate body following the successful completion of specialist training in Critical care medicine, or equivalent, with a minimum of three (3) years progressive post specialist qualification.
- Currently registered and licensed to practice medicine and apply specialty without supervision in own country or another UN member state.
- English proficiency- a minimum of Level B 2 is required.
- Experience working in conflict zones, international healthcare settings, or humanitarian missions.
- Certification in Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and/or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
- Quick decision-making abilities and resilience under pressure.
- Strong teamwork and collaboration skills.
- Compassion and empathy when dealing with patients and their families in traumatic situations.
- Work in fast-paced, high-stress environments, such as hospital critical care departments, urgent care centers, or in-field disaster response situations.
- Potential for long hours, night shifts, weekends, and holidays, depending on the healthcare setting.
- Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Evaluate and assess patients presenting with a wide range of medical ICU, including trauma, heart attacks, strokes, respiratory distress, and infectious diseases.
- Perform rapid and accurate diagnoses through physical examinations, medical history reviews, and necessary diagnostic tests.
- Administer emergency medical treatment, including advanced life support, stabilization of trauma patients, wound care, and resuscitation as needed.
- Perform minor and major procedures, such as suturing, intubation, chest compressions, and inserting IV lines or central venous catheters.
- Coordinate care with other specialists, such as surgeons, cardiologists, and neurologists, when necessary.
- Prioritize patient cases based on the severity of their condition through triage protocols to ensure the most critical patients receive immediate care.
- Make quick, high-stakes decisions under pressure, balancing resources and ensuring patient safety.
- Work as part of a multidisciplinary team, collaborating with nurses, paramedics, specialists, and other medical staff to deliver comprehensive care.
- Communicate effectively with patients and their families, explaining diagnoses, treatment plans, and the need for any follow-up care.
- Maintain accurate, thorough, and up-to-date patient records, including detailed reports of diagnoses, treatments, procedures, and outcomes.
- Adhere to legal, ethical, and regulatory standards, ensuring patient confidentiality and compliance with medical protocols.
- Respond to mass casualty incidents, natural disasters, or other emergency situations as part of the emergency response team.
- Provide leadership in emergency preparedness and disaster management within the hospital or healthcare system.
- Ensure that all medical interventions are performed in a safe, effective, and compassionate manner, in accordance with UNAMA and international emergency care standards.
- Monitor and maintain patient safety throughout their critical care process, ensuring timely and appropriate triage, diagnosis, and treatment.
- Ensure compliance with infection control, medication management, and safety protocols in the ICU department.
- Actively contribute to CQI efforts by assessing clinical practices, identifying areas for improvement, and developing strategies to enhance patient care in the ICU setting.
- Support the ICU department s operational effectiveness by ensuring adequate staffing levels, resource availability, and patient flow management.
- Supervise and assist in the management of mass casualty incidents, coordinating care with other departments and healthcare teams.
- Mentor and educate medical students, residents, and junior healthcare staff on emergency medicine techniques and protocols.
- Stay updated on the latest advancements in emergency medicine, including new treatments, technologies, and best practices.
- Promote ethical behaviour and alignment with Aspen Medical s Social Purpose and B Corp principles.
- Promotes the implementation of the Clinical Governance Framework and contributes to continuous quality improvement of health services through active participation and QI initiatives.
