Job Description
Roles & Responsibilities
- Accurately assign and validate International Classification of Diseases (ICD) and Diagnosis Related Group (DRG) codes to inpatient medical records, ensuring compliance with coding guidelines and regulations.
- Analyze medical documentation, including physician notes, operative reports, and lab results, to extract pertinent information for accurate code assignment.
- Conduct thorough reviews of medical records to identify and resolve coding discrepancies, ensuring data integrity and minimizing claim denials.
- Stay abreast of updates to coding guidelines, coding software, and regulatory requirements, including changes from CMS and other payers.
- Collaborate with physicians and other healthcare professionals to clarify documentation and address coding-related queries.
- Participate in coding audits and quality assurance activities to identify areas for improvement and ensure coding accuracy.
- Assist in the development and delivery of coding education and training programs for coding staff and other healthcare professionals.
- Manage and prioritize coding assignments to meet deadlines and maintain a high level of productivity.
- Review and resolve coding edits and rejections from payers, ensuring timely and accurate claim submissions.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient information and adhere to all HIPAA regulations.
Desired Candidate Profile
- Possesses a bachelor's degree in health information management, or a related field.
- Holds a Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or Certified Coding Associate (CCA) credential from AHIMA, or equivalent.
- Has a minimum of 3 years of experience in inpatient coding, with a strong understanding of DRG and ICD coding principles.
- Demonstrates proficiency in coding software and electronic health record (EHR) systems, such as EPIC, Cerner, or Meditech.
- Exhibits a deep understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology.
- Shows strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex medical documentation.
- Possesses excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with physicians and other healthcare professionals.
- Demonstrates meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy.
- Exhibits a strong work ethic and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
