Job Description

The Medical Coder is a vital position within the healthcare industry, responsible for accurately coding and categorizing patient information into standardized numerical codes. This crucial role ensures that the medical facilities' billing and claims processes run smoothly, leading to proper financial reimbursement from insurance companies and patients. The Medical Coder works closely with healthcare professionals to access patients' files and convert diagnostic and procedural information into the necessary codes. Detailed knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, healthcare procedures, and coding systems like ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS is essential. The role demands rigorous attention to detail, strong analytical skills, and a commitment to maintaining the confidentiality of sensitive health information.


Responsibilities
  • Translate healthcare diagnoses and procedures into standardized medical codes using ICD-10 CM/PCS and CPT.
  • Ensure all codes assigned accurately represent the documentation in the patient's records.
  • Collaborate with physicians and healthcare providers to clarify diagnoses and obtain additional information.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of coding guidelines, regulations, and compliance requirements.
  • Review patient files and records for completeness and accuracy before assigning codes.
  • Work with billing departments to resolve any discrepancies in coding and billing processes.
  • Participate in continuous training and development sessions to stay updated with coding standards.
  • Ensure data security by maintaining the confidentiality of patient information at all times.
  • Generate and analyze coding reports to assess and improve the accuracy of billing practices.
  • Identify potential issues in documentation and communicate with healthcare staff to improve records.
  • Meet productivity and accuracy benchmarks as set by the health organization or employer.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of quality improvement initiatives related to coding.

Requirements
  • Certification in medical coding such as CPC, CCS, or equivalent is required.
  • Strong understanding of ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding conventions and practices.
  • Proven experience working in a coding role within a healthcare environment.
  • Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail for high accuracy coding.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology is essential.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with providers and healthcare staff for clarifying information.
  • Proficiency in using computer systems and coding software for accurate and efficient coding work.
