Job Description

As a Medical Coder - OP (Outpatient), you play a crucial role in the healthcare revenue cycle management by ensuring accurate coding for outpatient services. This position requires a comprehensive understanding of coding guidelines and terminology, as well as a deep knowledge of medical billing processes. The ideal candidate is adept at translating healthcare procedures, diagnoses, and services into alphanumeric codes, a fundamental part of medical documentation and insurance claims. Your work directly influences the financial stability of healthcare facilities by minimizing claim denials and optimizing revenue collections. Working closely with healthcare providers, you ensure that all outpatient documentation is compliant with current coding standards and regulations. This role requires meticulous attention to detail, strong analytical skills, and the ability to handle sensitive patient data with confidentiality.


Responsibilities
  • Analyze outpatient charts to determine appropriate code assignments for diagnoses and procedures.
  • Ensure accurate application of ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems.
  • Review patient records and documentation for completeness and compliance with coding standards.
  • Communicate with healthcare providers to clarify ambiguous documentation in patient records.
  • Monitor and resolve incoming queries related to outpatient coding issues and discrepancies.
  • Stay updated with current coding conventions, regulations, and guidelines through continuous education.
  • Participate in coding audits and quality assurance reviews to improve coding accuracy.
  • Assist in training junior coders and medical staff in outpatient coding practices.
  • Collaborate with billing department to ensure accurate and timely claim submissions.
  • Apply knowledge of federal regulations to maintain compliance with outpatient coding protocols.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvement within the medical coding department.
  • Generate reports on coding activities and compile statistical data as required.

Requirements
  • Certification as a Medical Coder (e.g., CPC, CCS, or equivalent) is mandatory.
  • An Associate's degree in Health Information Management or a related field is preferred.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in outpatient medical coding is required.
  • Proficiency in ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems is essential.
  • Strong understanding of medical terminology and healthcare reimbursement methodologies.
  • Excellent analytical skills with a high level of attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks and priorities effectively.
