Mistakes That Will Never Let You Get the Desired Job

There is a difference between searching for a job and searching for ‘the’ job. Most people merely look for just another opportunity and end up feeling stuck or unsatisfied with their new jobs after some time. This happens because of certain mistakes that job seekers make unintentionally while searching for a job. To help you identify where you are going wrong with your job search, listed below are five of the most common job search mistakes job seekers make:

1. Not having a strategy:

Job seekers should take job search as a full-time job. Unfortunately, most candidates do little or no groundwork because they are not clear about what they want in their new jobs. This is especially true for those who have been off the job market for a while. Often, such candidates find it really difficult to find a job or end up in a job they don’t even like. That’s because they are so compelled by their desperation of finding a new job that they are ready to take any opportunity that comes their way. Therefore, it is important to have a job search strategy. Start with defining your job target and draft a proper action plan based on it.

2. Not focusing on the employer:

One of the biggest mistakes job seekers make is focusing too much on chasing jobs and neglecting the employers completely. It is important to like one’s job; however, it is equally important to be comfortable with the company you will be working with since you will be spending 8-9 hours every day in the office. In addition to finding your desired job, spend some time researching about the employers too. Talk to your friends, family members, and relatives about their workplaces, the work culture, company policies, etc. You can also check company reviews online to get a better picture of what it’s like to work with a particular company. Focusing on the employer also includes understanding the job requirement and sending the customized CV.

3. Not being selective:

Like we said in the first point, most job seekers feel that applying to hundred jobs through job boards is a productive approach. That’s far from being true. All you are doing is applying to jobs randomly. It is better to apply to ten jobs that fit your profile perfectly rather than applying to 50 jobs that don’t. Therefore, it is important to read job descriptions carefully. You don’t want to be overqualified or under-qualified for any job. Make it a point to apply to only those jobs that you are confident about. You might feel that your options have reduced. However, you will be more confident about the kind of job you will be landing ultimately.

4. Not utilizing the social media:

Nowadays, employers are taking the social media route for finding potential job candidates. If you don’t realize just how powerful social media is in job search, you might be losing out on loads of possible job opportunities. Therefore, your social media profile is as important as your CV. Make your profile online if you haven’t yet, update it regularly and keep it as professional as possible. Add relevant keywords in your professional information to attract more employers. Social platforms such as Facebook and Twitter have also emerged as great tools for job search in the past few years. So, don’t ignore them.

5. Not following the instructions:

Reading the complete job description is important not just for understanding the job role, but also for understanding the instructions. Many hiring managers and recruiters also mention specific instructions in job descriptions that the candidates are required to follow while applying for the job. Also, when called for an interview, the recruiter may ask you to fill some information or require you to explain certain types of experiences or give specific answers to help him / her understand your profile better. Make sure you follow the instructions and provide exact answers. Candidates who are unable to do so are likely to never hear back from the hiring managers.
